Adieu to the season..

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

So that’s it, the season’s over and for me the abiding memory will probably be that Torres goal today, turned the defender and slipped it under the goalie, that’s real class.

It’s been well documented the highs and lows of the season but I’ll leave it at the mere fact that we really need the quiet time to sort ourselves out and we’ve got Fernando Torres, Liverpool’s number 9.

Right now, some thoughts on the upside down world we live in…

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

This week has made me laugh at the sweet irony of life, there’s Masch, doing what Gerrard should’ve done and gone over to see why Torres was booked for having the nerve to be persistently fouled by the ugliest team to play football since the Ogre’s Under 12’s hockey team won the Gargoyle Cup in 1265, and he gets sent off because earlier in the week Mike Riley wimped out of showing Ashley Cole the red card (maybe Riley had some sympathy for poor Ashley given his missus had shown him the red card already) and Bennet wants to tell the world “It’s ok, the ref’s are back in charge”..

But then a player who organises a Christmas party for the opponents where wives and girlfriends aren’t welcome but 100 good looking girls are (and a gran for our Wayne); a party where things descend into a farce where one of the Utd players is alleged to have raped someone (he’s not guilty by the way), a player who ‘forgets’ to turn up for a drugs test, a player who’s material consumption puts him up there shopping like Posh Spice on speed, our one and only Rio, gets made Captain of England FC.

And this is supposed to be a way of making a point to John Terry who ran over to the ref during the Riley incident. What fucking point is that then? Be a loony spending freak off the park, missing drugs test but organising orgies and its ok, but run over to a ref, and get stripped of the England Captaincy or get sent off by Steve “Thanks Alex I’ll be round tomorrow night for supper (fish supper) again” Bennet.

Now someone tell me how that works…

PS Anyway wasn’t Gerrard England Capt last time they played so I’m not entirely sure what the press are bleating on about.

An Old Codger’s View on - Any Tom, DIC or Parry

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Written by Wooltonian, and posted here for a wider audience…

Whatever next ?

I’ve just been reading a thread regarding Hicks - Sandon II, an invite by a pub Director.

The following is my opinion having kept my gob shut all week, but having read liquorice allsorts since last weekend.

Holding any meeting in a pub is starting on the wrong foot. And as for a set agenda on any questions for current or future owners, isn’t that how we do things in a democracy?
Does anyone believe Prime Ministers question time agenda is not set in advance?

Any meeting with the club directors should be held inside Anfield, away from the prying eyes of the press, That way we will not get the media whores trying to get their name in the papers.
Representatives from all Independent bodies SOS SLFC and perhaps Independent website editors should make up the floor.

I have been reading all the threads lately but have decided holding my tongue was the wisest move. Having had time now to reflect on all I’ve read, I’m seriously wondering what fans want.

Do we want foreign ownership ? It doesn’t look like we do.
We’ve had fans as shareholders, but the decision was taken to sell out.
We’ve had a Scouser (Steve Morgan) try and take control and most websites cringed at the possibility of him taking us down the PLC route.
Wouldn’t SOS and SLFC do exactly the same ?
Who would fund the new stadium if we buy our club back ?
Who would finance Rafa’s next £25-50 million tantrum in the next transfer window ?

None of us like what we’re seeing under the current regime, but is there anyone who has all the answers ?
Do you honestly believe DIC will have the support of all the fans ?
Do you think we as fans, would be happy with another Abramovic who basically see his club as a “Boys Toy”?

I’m not clever enough business wise to make any judgements, and I remember my Grandfathers advice “keep quiet and let people think you are an idiot rather than open your mouth and prove it beyond doubt”.

My forte, if I have one, is writing about The History of Liverpool Football Club and avoiding day to day issues. Where history teaches us what we think on the spur of the moment is replaced by more “common Sense” decisions on later reflection. But as they say if there is one thing not common it’s common sense.

Jumping on the SOS or the SLFC bandwagon, when frankly you don’t fully understand their agenda is to me foolhardy.
I’ll start listening to parties when they announce their financial structure for the next five years including payment of the new stadium.
The next line I’m waiting to hear is, lets start a “Stay at Anfield” party ie avoiding the largest payment we have in our foreseeable future.
Buying back the shares might put the club back in the hands of the fans, but who is going to stump up the new stadium cost and the transfer kitty for the next 5 years ?

Before we jump out of the frying pan and into the fire I would hope fans who are business minded have a long hard look at a future purchasers financial manifesto. Thus being 100% sure the next move is the right move.
Otherwise what seems like Storm blowing through the Hallowed Halls may well turn into a force 9 tornado.
And the words of the song “At the end of the storm….. now, there will be a bigger one brewing”
Remember this, a tug of war always ends up with one side having their faces in the mud.

If you must choose a side make your selection wisely otherwise you will end up with a muddy face. If like me you are not business minded enough to understand my advise is to sit on the fence and just hope and pray for a successful out come.

It’s not embarrassing to abstain from making an ill judged decision.

My stance has been and always will be, I am a football fan who supports 11 players on the park. I don’t make management decisions and I do not make decisions at board level.
As Shankly once said, “the Directors are only here to sign the cheques, I’m here to prepare the team for the next game and the fans are here to support the team”
Right now it appears we want to select the directors, the manager want’s to take his ball home if he doesn’t get his own way and the directors want to drink in the bloody Sandon.
What a Cockeyed world we live in

If you consider abstaining from voting cowardly, be ready to accept the responsibility of the decision you make.

The truth at the moment is as fans we’re constantly being asked to choose sides.
Even when we put aside the differences between Owners and Manager.
Then another crack appears.
“Gerrard’s” now not a happy bunny (again)
And it appears after watching Rafa go 6 rounds with the owners, he wants to jump in the ring and take him to the distance.
The hacks this morning are talking about The fans siding with Steven Gerrard over Rafa Benitez.
Well I’m sorry both parties now look like their emphasis is improving their own CV’s rather than building something together.
I’ve always hated the side of Gerrard we see every now and again “I’m the Billy Big Bollocks” me me me.
And I’m not a big fan of Rafa when he does his “I’m taking my ball home if I cant get my own way”

As Big as Ron Yeats was and as hard as Tommy Smith was, could you see either of them trying a stunt like that with Shanks. Billy was the boss and no one ever questioned Shankly’s command.
I seem to remember Souness attempting the “I’m the Billy Big Bollocks” with Uncle Bob. And wasn’t it Paul Ince who last tried to be “Gaffer” if only in name.
Great players come and go, but if I’m ever asked to vote my allegiance between a player and a manager, I’m sorry the player is on the bus out of town. (or more likely in a bloody Ferrari that we’ve paid for)

Not content with watching our club tear itself into splinter groups, I’ve noticed recently than fan base doing exactly the same, SOS Shares LFC, AFC Liverpool. What’s next The Walton Breck Banker’s)?

The only way to get a say in matters concerning the club (and I’m not suggesting the club will listen) is to unite under a single banner, prepare an agenda for the possible meeting and stick to it. Don’t let anyone digress into trivial matters just so you can come out of the meeting claiming to have scored a few points.

I know this piece will not be popular but I cannot believe I am the only fan that is totally confused about what’s going on both on and off the park.
Remember the old Anny Road chant ”The Road End united will never be defeated”
If the club are having difficulty ‘Houlding’ it all together, lets show them for Gods sake, that we will not be split into small factions.

We all sing from the same song sheet in the spirit of the Old Kop.

“The Kopites united, will never be defeated,
the Kopites united, will never be defeated”

Games around the world?

Sheer madness.

I’m listening to David Gold, chair of Birmingham, say on Radio 5 Live, that he leads the vanguard in reducing ticket prices. Well I’ve now got stew coloured curtains at utter hypocrisy of the man who charges £45 for an away ticket at St Andrews.

He’s on the radio talking about his support for the notion that the Premier League teams will play an extra game in January of any given season, but in a far flung land, effectively to the highest bidder.

Well I’ve listened to the arguments for and the arguments against and have to say its bollocks. Complete bollocks.

 And here’s why:

1. Most managers accept the 38 games a season is already too much. Players are knackered, there’s no winter break, injuries are more common and the national team suffers from player exhaustion if not the club come the end of the season.

But no, now its ok to add in a possible 12 hour flight, a game in extreme heat conditions and the jet lag there and back, before playing the rest of the season.

2. Lets be honest here, there are several clubs who have worldwide brands, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea for instance. Possibly Everton, possibly er nope, that’s it. So who on Earth wants to see at their local ground, Wigan v Reading. Or next year, Watford v West Brom? Seriously? Each city is supposed to get one ‘big’ team, who draw out another ‘lesser’ team (top 5 don’t play eachother) and then the next day, two others play. No-one will give a shite about the other game.

3. Who are the top five, lets say for instance that Liverpool are 6th come January, or Man Utd, or Chelsea and so on, Bolton were top of the league a few years ago and certainly in the top five most of the autumn, are they going to be the seeded teams?

4. Who is going to pay a higher sum to watch Liverpool play live, when you can watch all of their games in a sports bar anyway?

5. Imagine your team gets drawn against Man Utd, thus playing them 3 times in a season, they win, you get relegated, whilst your relegation rivals play a lower team and get a draw and suddenly they stay up. How you going to feel?

6. all of the above.

Once again, the fan is being left out, the teams wishes are being ignored, and the £ sign has ‘chinged’ in greedy money grabbing eyes. Its a shite idea. never mind OOT’s we’ll soon be all OOC’s. Out Of Continents..

Munich 1958. RIP Those Who Died.

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

I would like to send my condolences to those families who were bereaved by the tragedy of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958. My thoughts are with the families and friends and colleagues of those who knew someone who was killed in that accident.

Full Stop.

However:

Now I don’t care what Manchester Utd fans sing, what they eat, what they think. I care less of them if they mock the dead of Hillsborough, and I despise the pettiness of their mindless supporters that think that’s in order. Otherwise they don’t enter my mind, and on any day never mind a day like this, what they do or don’t do, doesn’t justify any backlash of anyother fan let alone us.

I won’t let any other fan of any other club dictate to me how I should behave and I won’t use the media interest in that tragedy affect the way I see things. As far as I am concerned, anyone who thinks its clever to sing about tragedies are to be pitied for their weakness.

RIP to those who died, may god rest their souls.

The thoughts of RAWK on the current situation:

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Here are some questions I asked to some of the moderators of RAWK about the current situation, and their replies.

They say a week is a long time in politics, at Liverpool it’s an era, these were asked two days ago and already things have moved on; all the same its interesting to see how we feel.

The answers were given by MichaelA (MA), Armin(A), AlanF(AF), SteveM(SM) and myself, Hinesy(H).

1. Do you think if the Yanks sell to DIC, that would be a good thing, or a case of out of the frying pan…
SM: Who knows?  I said at the start that once Moores let go, then we are in the realms of money men, not football men and are open to the elements.  They could be great for us - they could be a disaster. MU fans may hate the Glazers, but (although prices have sharply increased and they have introduced a few other shitty measures), they have backed their manager 100% and provided the funds when required.

MA:DIC have much more money. The cowboys are making good money from their sport franchises, and we’re another revenue stream in their business model. I got the sense that DIC were always more about kudos and success, and building a global sports brand that just happens to make a mint for them, even though they’re already minted. So in that sense, I’d rather be the plaything of a rich man than the toothpaste tube that was being squeezed dry by a less rich man. I think the club would be better off in those circumstances too..

A:Yes on both counts. They were always a better choice than the Americans who barely had enough liquidity even after Hicks came on board considering the financial input required. Dubai has access to monies unaffected by the credit crunch, they need to invest now and the fundamental business model is excellent. Potential earnings once new distribution is fully achieved are stratospheric.

DIC also have a desire to project a global, prestige interest and there’s the possibility that they would’ve seen LFC as a way to augment this. So although ran as a business they may have splashed out every so often as a way of promoting the brand of Dubai.

They’re still businesspeople and not fans, we’ll never have a benefactor in the Moores style again but if we had to sell out then Parry and Moores should never have reneged on their deal, it was bad faith and I don’t believe DIC will come riding to the rescue but if they did it would be better than the current mob.

AF:I don’t think things will ever be the same again. I had reservations about DIC at the time -  Al-Ansari would not be spending his own money but investing Dubai’s money. If he could juggle the needs of DIC as an investment fund with his own personal ambitions we could sail along happily for a while. There would be no stability though. A change at the top of DIC (not unlikely in the near future and highly probable in the mid-term) would leave us in the hands of an investment company who have no interest in the footballing side of things. The Sheikh himself has no interest in football as far as I am aware.

H:yes we are heading in to the fire but I’d rather the heat of the desert than being a Texan BBQ plaything. I’m even more wary of any new investor and for all the slings and arrows aimed at him, Abramovich seems to be a unique force these days…

2. Hicks’ points are basically good sense.. if Rafa was talking about leaving surely they should’ve looked for a replacement in case… yes or no?

SM: Technically yes.  I don’t doubt all clubs line up their next manager in advance.  We were speaking to Mourinho and Rafa before Houllier got the bullet.  However Rafa has not mentioned leaving and there is no indication since Schuster went to Madrid that they want to change again. However it shows their lack of PR awareness in the UK football market when they openly admit they have been looking for a replacement. No-one in their right mind does this - this says to Rafa and all the players that Rafa’s days are numbered. How much damage does that do to morale in the team? Even Klinsmann himself knew not to mention any approaches from other clubs when doing his press conferences at Bayern. Their dealings with the media are poor.

MA:Yes, and yes. But if he wanted to share it with the world he should do it via an anonymous username on an internet forum, not by briefing the international press; that’s just dumb.

A:They took over a club that was at a certain stage with a manager, 2 years in and a very promising 2 years at that. The cycle needed to be respected, they weren’t buying a club in crisis but a 2 in 3 years CL finalist. They began the process of undermining him. Looking for contingency is one thing, using it as a blunderbuss battering ram mid season another.

AF:I don’t believe he was talking about leaving. Maybe those in the know can enlighten me but in all the rumour and inuendo the one constant is that Rafa loves it here and sees it (or saw it) as a long term thing. The choice of Klinsmann as their potential replacement is damning. They should have sacked Rafa at the start of the season or waited to the end. If we were in the relegation zone then maybe panic but at the time we were well in the hunt for the league and in the middle of our best form of the season.

H: As I said in some thread I think what Hicks did wasn’t a bad idea, but to announce it when previously he had been so conspicuously silent on support for the incumbent manager smacks of foolish pr at best and vindictive snidy undermining otherwise.

3. How do you feel they are damaging the club?

SM:To put it bluntly, they are making us a laughing stock and looking like a bunch of amateurs.  Rafa is beginning to look like Ranieri inhis last year.

MA:They seem to me to be out of their depth, and rather than trying to tread water and come to terms with their predicament they’re just yelling ‘help’ like a pair of pussies. They’re making themselves look naive and small time, and after years of quiet circumspection from David Moores, the club is tarnished by the association with the hick Hicks. They’ve built a house of cards on Merseyside, and they’re in danger of doing irrepairable damage to the club. I’d always naively assumed that LFC would always be above the petty board room spats and the idiotic chairmen who can’t help but open their mouths to fit in their feet. To see these two idiots bring down the curtain on that is despairing; it’s clearly affecting everyone at the club from the manager downward, it’s affecting the people in the stand and it’s affecting the players on the pitch - it’s unforgivably amateurish.

A:Where to start? They’ve mistaken rhetoric and PR for effective corporate governance. Latterly they’ve even lost their grip on that. The 50/50 split between owners is the Evans Houllier nonsense revisited, except a thousand times worse. Now every disagreement between them is conducted on the other side of the Atlantic whilst the club drifts in limbo. They speak when they shouldn’t and remain silent when they need to speak. Hicks has been to the G W Bush school of diplomacy and his casual laughing dismissal of supporter concerns is a slap in the face to people who have spent their lifetimes following a club with a history, heritage and immersion in its community that few sporting clubs in the world can match.

I could go on for ever on this one so I’ll leave it at that

AF:How long do you want it to be. In addition to everything else I have a huge problem with Hicks and the stadium. Some put it forward as the one thing they got right. For me it’s the perfect example of what is wrong. We had a stadium that had planning approval and was due to start on site. There were probably some modifiications that could be made but it was a 60,000 stadium that would put us on a par with the other top clubs. What was proposed by HKS was not what the club needed. My greatest hope is that they leave before they can start work on it.

H:For me the main thing is that they have pissed away years of reputation and sense of the Liverpool way. Even if we’re kidding ourselves that any ‘Way’ may have gone with the Boot Room, Liverpool were percieved as a club who knew how to do things. I had a lot of time for Parry until the ticket debacle, and over the last year or so, we’ve looked like a comedy act. Apart from the that, I do think the club’s progress has been put on ice, which these days is the same as backwards movement. By some time too.

4. We all got pissed off with Rafa recently, but I think he still has our support, or does anyone here think the Yanks should get someone else in?

SM:My philosophy is that I will always support whoever is out there on that pitch and whoever is in charge at the time. In saying that, players and  managers come and go and Rafa will go not doubt.  Whether he is pushed or quits is another matter. My priority has always been the League title and that has never changed. With the way Rafa sets out his team and uses the whole squad, I honestly don’t think he will have a chance of winning the title, this season or any other unless he is allowed to buy another 3-4 top players and therefore can minimise screw ups like at Reading, etc. Part of the reason that I’m not losing sleep over this is that we are behind the other 3 sides in more ways than one and therefore until that is sorted, I’m not convinced much will change on the title front, no matter who is manager.

MA:They haven’t got a fucking clue who to bring in. And neither have any of us. I want to win number nineteen. Can Rafa do that? I’m not convinced, to be honest, but he’s being hindered by outside forces, so I think he deserves full backing to achieve our ambitions.

A:He has my support, whilst I understand those who have doubts I don’t honestly look round at the league and think, I wish we had x. Only Wenger could perhaps have done more with the same resources and even he has had a long time to embed his style of play and is trophyless for a couple of seasons as well.

AF:The yanks shouldn’t be allowed to select the tea lady let alone a new manager. Yes I still support Rafa till the end of the season at least. It’s impossible to judge Rafa now. I have no doubt that the triple substitution at Reading was a result of the pressure Rafa is under. I no longer have any expectation for this year but changing now would also be pointless. For me it’s moved beyond Rafa now. He has gone and the fight moves on to the owners.

Jesus, a manager that can take a club that in previous seasons was described as an “underacheiver” and outside the “big three” European Cup success and then prove it wasn’t a fluke by getting to another final two years later… who has re-established the club in the “big four…” yes he deserves my support. If the takeover was meant to take us to another level, to provide that investment that would allow us to compete with Chelsea and United - then 2007/8 should have been “season zero” a new start and a new hope.

H:The short term frustration with the seeming lack of effort, the odd selections and lack of progress is nothing compared to the fucking up of our club by two idiots. On the pitch Rafa may continue to delight and frustrate in equal measures but would get my support. Off it, he has been treated very very badly indeed and by any rights, I wouldn’t blame him if you told them to stick it.

5. Should they sell up?

SM:If they can’t provide the funds they claim they had, then get the hell out.  So far they are been a waste of space. Stadium plans no further on and I don’t see any money being given to Rafa than wouldn’t have been provided by Moores.

MA:Unequivocally yes.

A:Yes, I believe they should. If there truly is a quick cash in available we should encourage them to take it. They’ve clearly bitten off more than they can chew. From a busines point of view, given sufficient real investment now there’s no doubt that LFC can stake a place at the forefront of a new explosion in UK football as income from overseas sales skyrockets. If we’re cash poor and hamstrung by debt then we’ll lose ground at a critical time.

From my perspective as a supporter I don’t trust them, hate the thought of them in control of my club and want them gone yesterday.

AF:Yes. I’m sick that I gave them the benefit of the doubt at the time they bade a bid. maybe naively, I still think Gillett understood what was required but if he can’t rein Hicks in then they should both go.

H:.I would’ve said no, not til the end of the season but I get a feeling something has to go, and it should be them.

RAWK Quiz.

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Right, here’s your application form to be a Liverpool fan. No googling, and if you don’t know the answer to some of these questions, then this’ll be a great way of learning some of the traditions of the club we claim to support.
And no, it’s not a test of who’s a superfan, but it is a way of pointing out that our team has many traditions and you should know them.

1) What does the Kop do that no other home end does (as far as I know) to the other team?
Applaud the away goalie

2) Which player has the record for the most FA Cup appearances for Liverpool ?
According to the official site its Ian Callaghan with 79 appearances…

3) Which player has the record for the most first team appearances and what is that number?
Ian Callaghan again… (857)

4) Which division did Tommy go into?
The Highland Division from Poor Scouser Tommy

5) What is unusual (these days) about our first three European Cup victories?
The squad numbers in all three matches were 1-11, not some lotto lucky dip arrangement we have these days

6) Which song starts off red but ends up orange?
Poor Scouser Tommy - the first tune is to the Red River Valley, and it ends up singing along to the Sash which is an Orange Order tune.

7) Where would you be sat if you were in MX?
You’d have the away fans on your right, and the rest of the Main Stand on your left, you’re in the corner facing the side of the pitch, near the corner flag

8 ) What are the two scores v. Everton in Liverbird Upon my Chest ?
Should’ve been three scores of course, apologies there, and they were 1-3 to us, 3-2 and of course 5-0

9) Why does Block 121 traditionally not join in with YNWA?
Too busy taking photos of the best support in the land. 121 is the away fans block.

10)And do the Turnstile Gates letter alphabetically clockwise or anticlockwise and where’s A?
It’s anti-clockwise and it starts down by Block 102, bottom left of the Kop if you are in Kop

11)Which is the odd player out and why? Masch, Kewell, Gerrard, Hyypia, Xabi Alonso?
Lots of good and correct answers but the one I was looking for was Steven Gerrard. All the others’ main songs just contain their name, Gerrard’s doesn’t.

12)What’s the next team in this seq? Reading, Everton, Blackburn, and why?
Manchester City - it’s a list of our last 4 home games this season

13) Two firsts for the club occurred 49 years apart. What and when were they?
We won our first title in 1901 and our first Wembley Final in 1950, we lost 2-0 to Arsenal in the FA Cup Final

14) What honours did we win in 2005-6? (it did say two but there’s more oops..)
FA Cup, Charity Shield, European Super Cup, and… the FA Youth Cup.

15) Finally, which green thing started in Ireland, moved to Scotland, ended up in a pub and now travels with us wherever we go?
The song the Fields of Anfield Rd. According the official site, legend has it, “the original ‘Fields Of Athenry’ was written in 1979 and soon adopted by Celtic fans, but arguably the first time it was sung at Anfield was December 1995, when Ireland lost to Holland in their Euro 96 play-off. The Liverpool version is believed to have originated in The Oakfield pub, home of the Liverpool Away Supporters Club, around 1997.”

The ongoing season review - August

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

So, the Mighty (so far) Reds have played their last game of the first month of the season, and August has been better than most Augusts of late.

5 proper competitive games played, yeilding 4 wins (and a draw with Robbing Styles and his team mates). Good attacking intent has been shown in all games, with 10 goals scored (averaging 2 per game) and, despite injuries and rotation of the defence, only two goals conceded - both from penalties, and both from rather dubious awards, to a bigger or lesser degree).

Particularly refreshing is that, in the 10 goals, we already have 7 different scorers, with the fact that all 4 strikers are already off the mark particularly pleasing in an era of immense media pressure for a non scoring forward. As Rafa loves o tell us, 4 strikers scoring 15 is as good as having a front pair scoring 30 each…
All the new signings have looked impressive so far, Benayoun, Torres and Voronin all being praised by the fans and media, Babel certainly showing he has something about him (not least the way he gets his shots away fantastically quickly and accurately when a chance presents itself), and even Leto and Levia impressing in their limited time on the pitch.

Some of the arrivals from last season have also shown a step up in their game, with Arbeloa and Kuyt both showing improvement in some of the deficencies they had last season.

Even Rafa has appeared to step up his game on all sides, with his handling of the media, his attacking mentality, his more settled premier league team selections, and his use of the squad to good effect.

Indeed, the squad really does look superb, as the performance against Toulouse proved, starting, as we did, without Gerrard, Carragher, Alonso, Kewell, Torres, Voronin, Finnan, Aurelio, Pennant and Levia - it certainly shows how much strength in depth and quality exists at the club now.

All in all, then, a positive month, and a start which, hopefully, we can use as a solid foundation for a good September - a month in which fixtures against Derby, Portsmouth, Birmingham and Wigan give us a chance to continue the good work to date.

Hopefully my September review will see us all celebrating another good month of results, and our sustained title charge!

Club or Country - to boo or not to boo..

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

A simple thought.
All those ‘Engurland’ fans who criticise Jamie Carragher for putting Club before Country, think about this. What does it mean to support a team, where the majority of the supporters celebrate a match with distinguished opponents in the great new national stadium by booing the national anthem of that team.
By managing to spend most of the match singing along to a banal drum and brass band sponsored by a so called newspaper that spends most of its time slagging off the manager and by booing every touch and kick by not only the opposition but by your own players that you don’t like.
I’d be embarassed to play for a team let alone support one.
Club or country ? easy. I have the utmost respect for any player playing for their national team and to boo them or their national anthem is just ridiculous. The outrage expressed by England fans when some foreign fans have the temerity to comment on our team or players, is hypocritical beyond belief - but hey ho, why not try and kick their heads in. That’s a good idea. Shame on all of you small minded boo boys.

Toulosing the will to live…

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

There’s nothing more likely to bring out the child in me than a Liverpool match on a workday afternoon. The furtive sneaking from the office, the joy of the illicit pint, it takes me right back to wagging double maths on a Monday morning, although I was a vodka drinker back then…

So yesterday afternoon I settled down in the local ready to watch what may be the most important tie of the year for Liverpool FC, or at least their accountants. As the media remind us ad nauseum, failure to qualify for the league stages would have disastrous consequences for the balance sheet, not to mention the humiliation of missing the business end of the European season. So plenty at stake, an attacking lineup with Gerrard in his favoured position and even some unseasonal summer weather, sunshine no less, to savour, at least on the telly. What more could one ask for?

Well, something approaching a football match would’ve been nice. Despite their scary sounding name Toulose were a poor side. Overly defensive considering the prize on offer they struggled to mount one shot on target in a first half controlled by Liverpool. The tedium was already mounting when Rick Parfitt got onto a Crouch header and unleashed a wonderful strike into the top corner.

To be fair, the French side had a bit more of the play after the break. Elmander had a couple of half chances and will need careful supervision at Anfield but the rest of the game passed in much the same vein as the first half. Even as a fan I found myself looking at my watch with the kind of angry expression more akin to the Old Trafford moaner in chief.

I didn’t need to stick around for the post match interviews to know that Rafa would be happy to have ‘controlled the game’. I’m also not one to prize an adventurous loss over a boring win. If the end of the season sees us celebrating in Moscow I’d happily play the same match another 14 times, but next time I play truant I hope to see a better game than that one.
